What is the ‘Anything But Eye Level’ theory?

It’s the theory of shooting above or below eye level to gain a fresh perspective and a more unique photograph overall.

Let’s assume that most photographs, or portraits, are shot at eye level- where the angle of the photo is placed at the subject’s height. This is a fairly impartial angle, and while probably the most ‘true’ angle, it doesn’t lend any new perspective on the subject or image. By that token, shooting a subject from below (imagine you’re crouched, pointing the camera at the subject while they stand over you) can create a feeling of dominance and power, and thus a more emotive narrative woven within the image.
