What is Film Grain?

The Basics:

Film Grain refers to the granular or sand-like appearance of a negative, print or slide. Generally speaking, the higher the ISO speed, the more grain that will form across an image.

In digital cameras, higher ISO speeds increases the sensor’s sensitivity to light. This brings about the incidence of ‘noise’, which can bear a resemblance to film grain, particularly if shooting in black and white.
