Heal The Earth by Camilla Rutherford

Recipient of the Canon Professional Grant, Camilla Rutherford, transformed her 'one day' photography project, into a 'today' project.

Living in a high-country merino farm, professional photographer Camillla Rutherford, has lived and breathed the farming lifestyle alongside her husband, Tim, and their two young sons. Her father-in-law, currently at the reigns of the high-country station, has done an immense amount of work to develop and protect the land they farm. Despite his passion and effort the farm workload & running costs were inconceivably high, work/life was all out of balance, as well as mounting pressure on the land and environment. Camilla's husband Tim and his father embarked on a journey into regenerative agriculture.

“Regenerative Agriculture is a system of farming principles and practices that increases biodiversity, enriches soils, improves watersheds, and enhances ecosystem services.”

To Tim and Camilla, regenerative agriculture was about regenerating the land they farm, bringing back life to the soil, restoring biodiversity, reducing (with the aim to eliminate) all chemical use. He is farming in tune with nature, going beyond organic to produce nutrient dense food and sustainable wool fibre for clothing. Camilla's project, 'Heal The Earth' passionately documented this process.

"Being awarded The Canon Professional Grant came at exactly right time for me. I had already started developing my personal photography project on our farm, but longed to take it further. But without financial backing or deadline to work towards it was a ‘one day’ project. Winning the grant gave me the get up and go to make it happen. I suddenly had something to work towards and began creating an end vision for my work."

"I am truly grateful for companies like Canon for supporting artists like myself to realise a project they would never have had the confidence or finances to achieve. It was overwhelming to suddenly have the notion that I HAD to do this project, which was a product of my own creativity. No client, no brief, no one to answer to apart from myself and my gut instinct to do what I felt was right."

"It's a pretty intimidating task to go head first into a project like this but the team at Canon where fantastic at giving me support, especially when it came to putting the exhibition together. I'm planning to run a couple more exhibitions showcasing this project so its not over yet! This is a subject I feel incredibly passionate about and it effects each and every one of us. I still have a burning desire in my belly to spread the regenerative word both to both urban and rural communities."
