Simple tips for professional portraits

27th April 2018

The great thing about a portrait lens (or prime lens) is its ability to take those amazing shots with your subject in sharp focus, while the background is blurred out with a beautiful soft-focus

  1. Get nice and close to your subject to increase the soft background
  2. Use the widest possible aperture – that’s a low f-stop number (e.g f/1.4 or f/2.8.)
  3. Experiment using landscape and portrait orientation for people shots
  4. Frame your subject off centre for a more interesting composition
  5. Try shooting your subject with the sun behind them for a backlit effect (contre-jour).

What is a Prime Lens

Prime lenses allow you to shoot quality professional portraits with maximum aperture and advanced optics.

Sven Martin

Originally from Cape Town, South Africa. The now Nelson based NZ pro photographer, Sven Martin, initially started shooting as a hobby in the skateboard industry while living in California, but his passion for mountain biking soon saw him travelling to some of the biggest races around the world, including the World Cup and Enduro World Series. In 2008, Sven decided to combine his love of action sports with photography to pursue it full time as a career and hasn’t looked back since. One of the top cycling photographers in the industry, being a professional rider in the past, has helped him develop a certain style and edge in his images as he knows the exact shots to get in order to create that emotional connection with the viewer.
